Remove excess noise from a set of mp4 videos.

Generate a noise reduction profile with sox using 'sox an_input_file.mp4 -n trim x y noiseprof profile', where x and y indicates a range in seconds that only the sound you want to eliminate is present in. 4. Run the command.

Run a job in the background and prefix it's output with some string. This is particularly useful if you are running inside a docker container in a startup script (sue me, I'll run two jobs in a docker container if I want to) and you can run something like: /usr/sbin/nginx 2>&1 | awk '{print "[NGINX] " $0}' & /opt/jws-3.1/tomcat8/bin/catalina.sh run 2>&1 | awk '{print "[TOMCAT] " $0}' & while true; do ; done it can also be combined with tee to create a file log as well as a stdout log, for example if the script above where a script called "/bin/start-container.sh" then you could run /bin/start-container.sh | tee /var/log/containerlogs Show Sample Output

Terminate script or shell if not launched as root

This example code is intended to be used as a root permissions check in a script. It makes use of the $EUID (effective user ID) environment variable which is fully su- and sudo-safe.

Push current task to background (paused) and resume it.

Saves opening another console terminal (eg. CTRL+ALT+F[n]) or opening another remote terminal. Ctrl+Z pauses the current task and pushed it to the background, leaving you with a command prompt for those "Oh crap I forgot to change xyz before I ran that and it'll take forever if I Ctrl+C and start again..." situations. Typing 'fg' (shorthand for foreground, that's how I remember it) will resume the paused task. Show Sample Output

Use ping to test if a server is up

The option -an disables audio recording, -f forces the use of video4linux for the input, -s sets the video to the size 320x240, -b sets the recording bitrate, -r sets the frame rate to 15fps, -i gives the input device, -vcodec sets the output format. Press Q to stop recording or you can specify the recording time with the -t option like -t 00:1:30

Unaccent an entire directory tree with files.

This command changes all filename and directories within a directory tree to unaccented ones. I had to do this to 'sanitize' some samba-exported trees. The reason it works might seem a little difficult to see at first - it first reverses-sort by pathname length, then it renames only the basename of the path. This way it'll always go in the right order to rename everything. Some notes: 1. You'll have to have the 'unaccent' command. On Ubuntu, just aptitude install unaccent. 2. In this case, the encoding of the tree was UTF-8 - but you might be using another one, just adjust the command to your encoding. 3. The program might spit a few harmless errors saying the files are the same - not to fear.

Recursively remove 0kb files from a directory

Remove a file whose name begins with a dash ( - ) character

Using the redundant ./ directory information prevents the dash from occurring at the beginning of the filename, and being interpreted as an option of the rm command. Also works using: $ rm -- -filename

Get the serial numbers from HP RAID

This dumps serial numbers of all the drives but HP warranty check does not say they are valid ...

check open ports without netstat or lsof

a function to find the fastest DNS server

http://public-dns.info gives a list of online dns servers. you need to change the country in url (br in this url) with your country code. this command need some time to ping all IP in list.
