The Linux kernel uses unused memory in caches. When you execute "free" you never get the "real" available memory.
run sync first to flush useful things out to disk!!!
To free pagecache:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
To free dentries and inodes:
echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
To free pagecache, dentries and inodes:
echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
where proc filesystem mounted under /proc
=1 --> to free pagecache
=2 --> to free dentries and inodes
=3 --> to free pagecache, dentries and inodes
