Set laptop display brightness
Run as root. Path may vary depending on laptop model and video card (this was tested on an Acer laptop with ATI HD3200 video). $ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to discover the possible values for your display.

Adding formatting to an xml document for easier reading
Sometimes you're trying to read through an xml file to determine whats wrong with it and a tool had removed all the linebreaks. xmllint will go ahead and make it pretty for you.

Stream YouTube URL directly to mplayer.
Streams youtube video with v=ID directly into the mplayer. If exists, it uses the HD-quality stream. If you don't want to watch it in HD-quality, you can use the shorter form: $ID=52DnUo6wJto; mplayer -fs $(echo "http://youtube.com/get_video.php?&video_id=$ID$(wget -qO - 'http://youtube.com/watch?v='$ID | perl -ne 'print $1."&asv=" if /^.*(&t=.*?)&.*$/')")

List all execs in $PATH, usefull for grepping the resulting list
While it seems (to me at least) a little counter-intuitive to filter on name first, this requires less work for find, as it allows it to immediately discount any files that do not match the name directly from the directory listing on disk. Querying against file attributes requires reading the file attributes, which is performed for all files matching any name based predicates.

Display which distro is installed

send file to remote machine and unzip using ssh
This version transfers gzipped data which is unzipped as it arrives at the remote host.

List all TCP opened ports on localhost in LISTEN mode
Alternative of OJM snippet : This one show the IP too, where ports bind. It's very important, because if there's only 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0, connections from internet are rejected.

Getting the ip address of eth0

How to sum lines with decimals in awk
Read all lines using decimal marker as point, then add all them up and outputs the result.

Which processes are listening on a specific port (e.g. port 80)
swap out "80" for your port of interest. Can use port number or named ports e.g. "http"

Follow the Tweets.

Every new command is wrapped in a tweet and posted to Twitter. Following the stream is a great way of staying abreast of the latest commands. For the more discerning, there are Twitter accounts for commands that get a minimum of 3 and 10 votes - that way only the great commands get tweeted.
