I made a perl compatible version as wel. AWK is still shorter. Although the actual 'script' is 1 byte shorter for perl in this representation. Condensed, awk wins: '{x=x+$4}END{print x}' vs '$a+=$F[3];END{print$a}' To sum it up. Awk is more cooler then perls are ;-)

You can use '+=' in awk, it makes the command even shorter. awk -F',' '{x+=$4}END{print x}' test.csv
