Thanks! I created command "calc" from this that I can use from the command line at any time (faster than echo "equation" | bc) ~/bin/calc #!/bin/bash ARG=("$@") x=$( printf "%s" "${ARG[@]}" ) calc(){ awk "BEGIN{ print $* }" ;} calc $x
