Short one line while loop that outputs parameterized content from one file to another

cut -f 1 three-column.txt > first-column.txt
There is a common command for outputting a field or list of fields from each line in a file. Why wouldn't you just use cut?

What Others Think

Using awk is much easier if the columns are separated by strings of spaces -- cut only seems to be useful to me when the columns are separated by single tab (or other single) characters.
