Every new command is wrapped in a tweet and posted to Twitter. Following the stream is a great way of staying abreast of the latest commands. For the more discerning, there are Twitter accounts for commands that get a minimum of 3 and 10 votes - that way only the great commands get tweeted.

It seems, after poking around under ubuntu, if you have perl installed, invoking 'rename' will actually invoke a perl script intended to improve on the behavior of the 'normal' rename utility provided by util-linux-ng, and typing the command as listed above will result in a weird error. To invoke the non-perl version (I've only checked under ubuntu), try
rename.ul .JPG .jpg *.JPGTo more permanently restore the non-perl rename, edit the symbolic link /etc/alternatives/rename to point to /usr/bin/rename.ul
to rename *.JPG or JpG or jPg and so... to *.jpg
rename 'y/A-Z/a-z/' *.[jJ][pP][gG]@ bwoodacre
'which rename' will tell you the location, so you can call it like this:
/usr/bin/rename .JPG .jpg *.JPGThat's why you should use full paths if you want to make the scripts portable.
