What's this?

commandlinefu.com is the place to record those command-line gems that you return to again and again. That way others can gain from your CLI wisdom and you from theirs too. All commands can be commented on, discussed and voted up or down.

Show total size of each subdirectory, broken down by KB,MB,GB,TB

find out which directory uses most inodes - list total sum of directoryname existing on filesystem

Get all mac address

Find distro name and/or version/release
Works for most distributions, tested on Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Gentoo, SUSE, RedHat. Debian and Slackware: $cat /etc/*version

open two files on top of each other in vim (one window, two panes)

log2 in Bash
Calculates the ceiling of the log2 of a given argument.

Which processes are listening on a specific port (e.g. port 80)
swap out "80" for your port of interest. Can use port number or named ports e.g. "http"

send DD a signal to print its progress
Sends the "USR1" signal every 1 second (-n 1) to a process called exactly "dd". The signal in some systems can be INFO or SIGINFO ... look at the signals list in: man kill

Simulate typing

Force unmount occupied partition
Alternative if "Lazy unmount" (umount -l) doesn't obey. Alternative for NFS: $ umount -f /media/sdb1 Use with caution: forcing to unmount a busy partition can cause data loss!
