Set a posix shell to echo all commands that it's about to execute, after all expansions have been done.
the 'set -x' mode can be exited by typing $ set +x

Monitor a file with tail with timestamps added

back ssh from firewalled hosts
host B (you) redirects a modem port (62220) to his local ssh. host A is a remote machine (the ones that issues the ssh cmd). once connected port 5497 is in listening mode on host B. host B just do a ssh 127.0.0.1 -p 5497 -l user and reaches the remote host'ssh. This can be used also for vnc and so on.

connects to a serial console
cu (call UNIX) establishes a full-duplex connection to another machine (*BSD) using a serial console. Convert df command to posix; uber GREPable
It is a pain grep-ing/sed-ing/awk-ing plain old df. POSIX it!

Start COMMAND, and kill it if still running after 5 seconds

cat a file backwards
Or "tail -r" on Solaris.

parrallel execution of a command on remote hosts by ssh or rsh or ...
parrallel execution of a command on remote host by ssh or rsh or ... very useful for cluster management (software update)
