Backup a file with a date-time stamp
Appends the input file with the date format YYYY-MM-DD.bak. Also runs silently if you remove the -v on the cp at the end of the function.

ping a host until it responds, then play a sound, then exit
After this, just type: $ beepwhenup You need to install "beep" before this would make the beep sound. Save it in your .profile if you want to use it later WARNING: this command won't exit until it is successful. You won't be able to CONTROL+C out of it.

Root shell

Run a command after the process you choose finishes
Run a command as soon as another long-running command finishes. E.g. suspend the machine after performing apt upgrade. The process is selected interactively via fzf.

Faster and more convinent than [Esc]

!* Tells that you want all of the *arguments* from the previous command to be repeated in the current command
Example: touch file{1,2,3}; chmod 777 !*
