Grep all non-ascii character in file
It will highlight non-ascii character in a file. those character can cause problem for some application parsing ascii file.

Prevent non-root users from logging in
Also with optional message: $ echo "no login for you" > /etc/nologin (This doesn't affect your current X session - you're already logged in!)

Creating ISO Images from CDs/DVDs
create an iso from your cd/dvd-rom device . You need to umount /dev/cdrom before using the cli

a function to find the fastest DNS server
http://public-dns.info gives a list of online dns servers. you need to change the country in url (br in this url) with your country code. this command need some time to ping all IP in list.
